In late May, the Mental Health Tips organization I volunteer for hosted its first-ever fundraiser, NAMI’s Celebrity Jeopardy. The idea had been brewing in my mind since last year, and when January arrived, we wasted no time getting started. For the next six months, it consumed my life – sleeping, eating, and breathing the event. Although I felt stressed, my passion for the cause kept me hooked. I was addicted to the work, finding fulfillment despite the anxiety it brought.
My husband couldn’t grasp the situation. He worried about the endless work hours, my inability to sleep, and the times when I let out my frustrations. He stressed the importance of self-care, and I detected the seriousness in his voice. It hit me that I had been neglecting myself. Consequently, I devised five strategies to implement when I feel off balance and on the verge of a potential panic attack that could lead to depression.
Avoid overworking, and embrace self-care with these 5 tips:
Binge-watch your favorite TV shows.
When I’m feeling drained and running low on energy, I find solace in binge-watching my favorite TV shows. It’s a comforting escape where I can immerse myself in the lives of the characters and easily predict the storyline, providing a sense of relaxation and peace. Watching these shows feels as effortless as putting on a soothing Band-Aid, offering a temporary respite from the challenges of the day. The familiarity of the characters and the anticipation of what’s to come in the show help me unwind and recharge, making it a go-to self-care activity for me.
Spend a day doing self-care activities.
Immerse yourself in a day of self-care, embracing rejuvenating activities that revitalize your spirit. Start with a soothing massage, releasing tension and restoring relaxation. Luxuriate in long, tranquil baths, offering an escape from the busyness of life. Capture your thoughts and emotions through journaling, freeing your mind, and finding clarity.
Indulge your taste buds with cherished delights – savor the flavors of Chick-fil-A and the aromatic ga roti from Vietnam. While nature beckoned, pesky mosquitoes led me to my sunroom, a vibrant sanctuary with abundant natural light, elevating my mood and evoking pure joy.
This day of self-care taught me the essence of nurturing oneself, finding harmony and balance. Embrace these simple pleasures that rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. Cherish the significance of self-love and the importance of dedicating time to care for yourself.
Self-care is a vital aspect of overall well-being, allowing you to recharge and rediscover your purpose. Dedicate time to cherish your happiness, relish in your own “happy place,” and seize the transformative power of self-care to nurture a joyful and fulfilling life. Remember, you deserve this special time to cherish your well-being and emerge refreshed and ready to conquer life’s challenges.
Meditate or do deep breathing.
Discover the power of meditation and deep breathing to enhance well-being. Though meditation may seem challenging, guided apps can assist you in finding tranquility. Benefit from mindfulness, stress management, and reduced anxiety. Embrace box breathing, inhaling for four seconds, holding, exhaling, and repeating – a technique embraced by Navy SEALs for its calming effects. Prioritize these practices to foster inner peace and improve mental health.
Go to a therapist or counselor.
Prioritize your mental Health Tips and learn to say no. Although challenging, it’s the most impactful self-care action. At first, I eagerly took on every task during the fundraiser, leading to burnout. Through therapy and self-care, I recognized the importance of stepping back and setting boundaries. Saying no alleviated the burden, allowing me to delegate and communicate effectively without sacrificing involvement. Embrace the power of saying no for a healthier, balanced life.
The fundraiser achieved remarkable success, and I’m glad to say my mental well-being remains strong. Currently, I’m taking a two-week break from work, although it feels more like a brief breather, maybe just one breath. Unlike before, I’m not working the strenuous 40 hours a week.
It’s crucial for me to have Mental Health Tips, not only for my own benefit but also to be of better help to others. A healthy and content version of myself allows me to fulfill my roles as a devoted mom, wife, daughter, and friend more effectively. By nurturing my well-being, I can give my best to those I care about and continue to make a positive impact in their lives.
